Part of Victor's famous Roman numeral series, the Victor IV was in production from 1902-1920, according to Baumbach's book Look For the Dog. It was only one of two machines offered in mahogany, a finish most popular with upper class tastes, the other machine being the top-of-the-line Victor VI. Only around 33,000 Victor IVs were manufactured, making it the second most rare machine in this series next to the Victor VI.
This example is in extra nice cosmetic condition, and has been mechanically restored.
We have removed the motor and taken it apart, cleaned, lubricated, inspected and adjusted everything. On this particular machine, for example, some new governor springs and weights needed to be installed. We cleaned and lubricated the turntable shaft bearing. We removed, cleaned and re-greased the two mainsprings, a big job particularly on an early motor like this, but important for smooth running because it prevents the springs from sticking to themselves as they unwind.
We also rebuilt the reproducer for maximum sound.
This Victor IV is now running as nice and smooth as can be, as you can hear by clicking on the audio file or by viewing the youtube video below.
The machine has exceptionally nice original finish. A small flake on the edge of the motorboard was filled in -- you probably would never notice it unless we told you about it. The nickel plating on the tone arm is very nice also, and the decal work and paint on the back bracket is much, much better than average.
The very desirable wooden horn has excellent original finish/original decal and is in extraordinarily good condition -- no separation of the panels or delamination of the veneer. The color of the horn nicely matches the finish of the cabinet -- it may appear washed out in one of the pictures because of the flash on our camera, but this is not the case.
In sum, a really great machine, offering Victor quality, Victor fidelity, and terrific eye appeal.
