This is the book everyone started with. First published in 1957, this first complete scholarly summing up of the history of the phonograph up to the 1950s was read and re-read by every collector, including myself. Copies were treated as dearly as a family Bible.
Recent research has added to the framework of the book, and its strong anti-Columbia bias has been questioned, but if I had to name two or three essential books for any collector's library From Tinfoil to Stereo would always be in the list. It is that comprehensive.
The book was reprinted in 1977, upon the 100th anniversary of recorded sound. This is the second edition of that reprint. A substantial revision in 1994 by Leah Burt met with at best mixed reviews.
