Intended for the luxury market, the very rare Louis XV Edison Diamond Disc phonograph was introduced in 1912. Many collectors would crown it as the most beautiful, elegant, ornate disc phonograph ever offered by Edison.
The price in 1912, $375, would be the equivalent of over $11,000 in 2023.
The first version of this machine was marked A375. In 1915 the motor was slightly modified, and a second version appeared as the B375.
As might be expected, sales were limited; according to Frow's book The Edison Disc Phonographs, well under 200 examples were sold. The B375, the model we are offering here, represents a significantly small amount of that total. The serial number on our machine is 112, but since Edison was known to start serial numbers at 100, this is probably the 12th B375 that came out of the factory.
Cosmetically, the machine has good, original mahogany finish with typical age darkening and very minor alligatoring. There is some slight evidence of the usual waterspotting from flowerpots on the lid. There is no veneer peel, cabinet separation, or chips and gouges that you might see with age. On the whole, I don't think you will see one with better original finish.
We had repaired/replaced some parts in the motor, and the machine is now playing smooth and strong. The reproducer is in good condition, and the machine plays with excellent fidelity. You can hear it on the youtube video below.
These gorgeous machines rarely come on the market. If you want the ultimate best in an Edison disc phonograph, I'd strongly suggest you act on this machine while it is still available.
