Introduced in 1909, the Fireside model was intended to replace the Edison Standard, but wound up being sold contemporaneous with it. The Fireside's pleasing compact shape and reliable mechanism, combined with its relative scarcity, make it a favorite of collectors.

The machine here is the Model B Fireside of 1912. It was identical to the Model A Fireside, except that the B Fireside was a straight four minute machine, ie it was intended to play only the new four minute records. This example has been modified to accept a carriage from a Model A Fireside and a Model H four minute reproducer; the practical effect of this change is that this Fireside will safely play four minute black wax Amberols, as well as regular Blue Amberol cylinders.

This Fireside has been mechanically restored. We have taken everything in the mechanism totally apart and put it back together. All the gearing, both in the motor and in the upperworks, has been disassembled, inspected, cleaned and lubricated. The mandrel shaft has been cleaned. The governor shaft and collar have been polished for smooth running. The mainspring has been pulled and re-greased, a big job. Then the motor was re-belted. Needless to say, the machine is running nice and smooth.

Cosmetically, the machine carries nice original finish and original decal.

The Number 10 Cygnet horn on this machine is special. Cygnet horns, a late development, were acoustically the best sounding horns Edison ever made, and command a premium. They are typically found with heavy rust or new paint, but this cygnet has very nice original paint and decals. There is a small crease across two of the panels.

The cygnet craning is a high quality reproduction appropriate for this type of carriage, and includes the special adjuster mechanism to properly set the height of the horn.

The Model H reproducer is playing loud and strong, as you can hear in the mp3 or in the youtube video embedded below. I've seen enough of the these reproducers with slightly worn styli that seem to play OK, but when you compare them with the reproducer on this machine you can really hear the cylinder come alive.

Price includes a bonus baker's dozen original Blue Amberol Edison cylinders.
