Edison Model E Standard With Red Morning Glory Horn - Restored for sale

$1050

This late version of the Edison Standard Phonograph was introduced in November, 1911. It was a straight 4 minute machine, as the playing time of Edison cylinders had already been extended in 1909.

This example has been cosmetically and mechanically restored. It has also been fitted with a beautiful red iridescent morning glory horn with hand-painted flowers.

We have taken everything in the motor and upperworks apart, cleaned, inspected, lubricated, adjusted and put it back together. The mainspring has been pulled and re-greased, a big job, but important for smooth running. The swollen old mandrel bearing has been extracted and replaced, also a big job, but usually required on this type of machine. Only after we were satisfied that everything was turning smoothly was the machine re-belted and tested.

The case has been nicely refinished with a quality reproduction decal.

The bedplate has clean original paint and very good decal work.

The old, original red morning glory horn is an aftermarket horn (as were almost all horns with hand-painted flowers). It's in far better than average condition, nice and shiny with very good paint, with some typical light creasing in the panels. This case also has four holes drilled in the rear for a Cygnet crane bracket, but the front panel is slotted to accept a clip for the type of crane that is on it now. The craning on this case, with a "duck foot" in the front to keep everything from tipping over, is a reproduction, very close in design and style to original Edison craning.

This machine comes with an original, rather scarce Model N reproducer. The N reproducer employed an oversize diaphragm for louder sound, and a 4 minute sapphire stylus. Because the shell of the N was cast of pot metal, you almost always find some swelling in this reproducer, and some flaking of the neck of the reproducer, as is true in this example. None of this affects the sound or the flexible horn connection, which we have replaced with soft new rubber.

This machine is now playing quite impressively, as you can hear by clicking on the audio link, or by listening to a different record on the youtube video below.

Four minute cylinders, manufactured until 1919, are the easiest kind of cylinder record to get. To get you started, we'll include 10 original Edison Blue Amberol records with this Standard.
