Columbia BN With Red Horn for sale

$1450

This version of the Columbia BN, also designated the Improved Champion, was introduced in 1908 at a price of $25. A mid-range machine, the BN's double spring motor offered extended playing time.

We have performed considerable mechanical work on this machine to get it going right. I don't know the meaning of "serviced" or "restored" on a venue such as ebay, but I can tell you what kind of restoration we have engaged in with this machine. When we received it, the motor was coated with over 100 years of dried out old grease and dirt, and the spring was sticking to itself as it unwound. It isn't unusual to receive machine in this condition. A seller on a venue such as ebay could have told you that the machine was working, and it did. Sometimes. And sometimes it mysteriously came to a stop.

We disassembled the motor, cleaned and lubricated everything, and readjusted everything. We also pulled, cleaned and re-greased both mainsprings. This is a big job, particularly on Columbia spring barrels which are harder to work on than some other brands.

We also rebuilt the reproducer, replacing the rock hard old gaskets with soft new ones for maximum sound.

This Graphophone is now playing as nice as can be, as you can hear in the mp3.

The case (see pictures) has weathered original old dark varnish with both original decals. There is minuscule veneer flaking on the motorboard. The tone arm and bracket are very clean. There is a crack in the back panel of the case which some previous owner owner re-glued and reinforced from the inside. It isn't unusual to see this kind of split on the back panel, and it is usually caused by placing excessive pressure on the back bracket. The repair shouldn't cause you any trouble in the future.

The iridescent red horn with gold striping, approximately 18 inches long with an 18.5 inch bell, is in very nice original condition.

No 78rpm records? No problem. We'd be happy to send you any reasonable number for only the cost of USPS Media Mail.
