One of the scarcest and most desirable of the Amberola models, the upright Amberola A was introduced in 1910.
The fancy and well constructed cabinet was a competitor to the best of Victrola craftsmanship, and stands in contrast to the less robust Amberola models following the great factory fire of 1914.
The mechanism is especially intriguing to collectors as it featured a moving mandrel/stationary reproducer in the style of the rare Edison Opera.
The Amberola A contained four drawers, with storage for 100 cylinders.
These machines can play both 2 and 4 minute cylinders. Because the Model M reproducer on this Amberola employs a sapphire rather than diamond stylus, it can also play 4 minute wax Amberol records as well as celluloid Blue Amberol records.
Cosmetically, this Amberola A has been nicely refinished to its original dark mahogany. The bedplate has very decent original red paint. All the brass clips for cylinder storage are present.
The machine is missing the automatic stop (as are most Amberola models of this type) but can still be stopped effectively manually. The little switch that extends out to front of the reproducer to switch from 2 to 4 minute setting is broken off, but the styli can easily be flipped with your finger.
I have tested this machine on both 2 and 4 minute settings and it is playing well on both. Both the 2 and 4 minute styli are in good condition and sound strong.
You can see this play a 2 minute cylinder on the youtube video below, and you can hear it play a 4 minute record by clicking on the mp3 file.
No records? We'll include half a dozen cylinders to get you going.
