Nifty Nirona
$200
I've never been able to get an exact date on these German kiddie phonographs, but from the looks of these I'd say late teens or early twenties. There were several Nirona models, but this round Nifty Nirona is the only model that I've ever encountered, and it is fairly scarce and has always been popular with the collectors. It uses a reflector type horn that almost looks like some sort of exotic plant life. The corrosion you see on this example is typical of the way most of these have survived. The motor on this machine is working properly. I had to make a new speed control rod for it; the rod is binding against the case but the speed is proper and can be adjusted. (If you want to see what the motor looks like I
took some photographs of it when I disassembled the case. I doubt that what's left of the crank is original but it does work. The mica was busted on this reproducer when I received it. It's not advisable to attempt to disassemble the reproducer because it's pot metal, so I slipped in a slightly smaller piece of mica from the front and gasketed it, and in lieu of securing with the little screw I secured the linkage with an epoxy connection. It's probably not as loud as the original, but it does reproduce clearly. These machines usually bring $350 -- buy it for less, $200
