Spectacular large 1850s musical jewelry box
$6000
This beautiful, elaborately veneered musical jewelry box probably dates from the 1850s. It contains an early clock type musical movement with brass bedplate and fine cut comb (not sectional) which is original and appropriate to its age. The keywind movement is of the type sometimes called reverse comb, with the bass end where the treble would customarily appear, and vice versa. The musical movement is working properly. The detent would have been engaged by a wire running through a small tube in the center of the case.
The case is all magnificently hand done, with many drawers and secret compartments. The inlay looks to me like an exotic burl wood, possibly walnut. This is a full size case, in very nice condition, approximately 21 inches long by 16 inches deep by 15 inches high, and was probably meant to be displayed atop a piece of furniture matching in style. I have heard of only one other piece like this. This musical jewelry box, surpassing museum quality, will be the highlight on any collection. $6000
