Madame Hendren Dolly Rekord phonograph doll
$550

A good original example of the Madame Hendren phonograph doll. These dolls, employing a mechanism made by the Averill Manufacturing company, were popular from the mid 20s to the 1940s. The dolls were sold under a number of different names, and were often given as premiums.

This example is playing well and articulately, and comes with one of the special blue records. She is in good condition for a composition doll. The composition material usually explodes or cracks; this Dolly Rekord has a few age cracks on her face (somewhat more prominent than the photograph shows) but is overall in decent condition. Some spots of the outer layer of what appear to be original paint are flaking down to a lighter undercoat. The wig is old (I'm not certain it is original) and may have been cut a little at one time. Her eyes close properly when she is put down.

These dolls are not as rare as the Edison or Lioret phonograph dolls of the 1890s, but are much more affordable, and make an interesting complement to a cylinder machine collection. $550
